Many years ago (1956 to be exact) I came across a group of tourists learning ukulele in front of the old Reef Hotel on Waikiki Beach. Visitors would buy a uke and a Hawaiian we called " old Dave" would teach us to strum simple songs such as "Beyond the Reef". Every day my girlfiend and I would trot to the banyon tree and faithfully sit and strum between swims. Does anyone remember these gatherings???Every Tuesday evening locals would get together outside on the beach and play and sing all the Hawaiian medodies. One night it rained and Dave took us to a small restaurant filled with the locals who had gone there due to the rain. It was lovely to have been there and although I have visited Hawaii many times since those early memories are very dear to me. No doubt Dave has long gone but I just wondered of anyone might remember him and those early times. Signed Cynthia Martin of Ottawa,Canada
