I have been a fan of the Hawaiian and Polynesian music for about 50 years. When I was growing up in Czechoslovakia, there was this splendid band in the fifties and sixties, called "Kucerova instrumentalni skupina" alias "Instrumentani skupina Vaclava Kucery" alias "Kucerovci" (i.e. "Vaclav Kucera's Instrumental Group) from Prague. Besides playing and singing the songs from Polynesia, they also played songs from Indonesia and Latin America. Vaclav Kucera was a fantastic musician. His hawaiian and steel guitar playing has been one of the best I have ever heard. He also played other instruments, including a spanish guitar, trumpet and double base. His arrangements were ever so good. The members of his band were also very capable musicians. Under the cloud of the oppressive comunist regime between 1948 and 1989, the music of the Kucera's band gave us both the young and the old a taste of the athmosfere from tropical islands of Hawaii, Tahiti and Indonesia as well as of the Americas (including the country and western song from the USA). I used to have their 78rpm and 45rpm records. I left Czechoslovakia in 1968 for Sydney, Australia without all those records of mine. Only in 1978 I got hold of some of the old Kucera's re-recordings, including songs from the New Kucera's Group. After 1989, the Czechs published a few CDs with Kucera's Band music. I would like to hear from the readers of this Forum about their experience/knowledge of the Czech hawaiian music bands, as well as of hawaiian bands from other European countries such as Holland etc.

Aloha Olin The person to contact in the Netherlands is Gerald Venema, Wijkerstraatweg 272, En Velsen Noord 1951, Netherlands. He does not have e-mail so far as I know. He is involved with a large Hawaiian music club. They produce a very big show every year at Easter.

Aloha, I'm from Berlin/Germany and I just found 4 x 7" Singles by Vaclav Kucera at a local fleamarket. I never heard of the Ensemble before and I'm amazed by this outstanding group. Please let me know if you've received any more information on the group because (especially the song WIKI WIKI) and I try to find as much of their Records as possible. Sincerely, Stefan Walz

Aloha to all of you, This is a "did you know" message: The Royals and the Royal Hawaiian Band traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East, by invitation. Lili'uokalani accompanied Queen Kahumanu to England for Queen Victoria's Jubilee. She wrote and dedicated the Queen's Jubiliee song to her going over on the ship. King Kalakaua was invited to the Far East is said to have written a song for the King who invited him, although it has been lost. Hawaiian music is known, played, sung and danced by Hawaiian groups and bands from Finland to Indonesia, Great Britain to Russia. People who know no English know the word "Hawai'i" and can identify our rich, lyrical music whenever they hear it.
