I've always been fascinated by the way Hawaiian music has always seemed o set moods in many people. Never have I not seen people engaged in laughter, or enjoying themselves when listening to our wonderful tunes. Lately, being thrushed into the arena of wanting more of my heritage and Hawaiian music, I found myself with my already existing hectic schedule, engaged in promoting Hawaiian music and groups here in Phoenix, Arizona. To no surprize, at least to myself, I'm finding a sense of satisfaction and completeness. When the artist come to town, I find myself, as if a keiki in a candy store, wanting to talk to them so much and itching for some good tunes and reminishing my youth attending Nanaikapono elementary, or going to Samuel Wielder King school, and even my years when I attended Leilehua High School. Still the music stayed in my heart and mind. I recall Eddie Kamae, Don Ho, Hui o' Hana, Gabby Pahinui, "Kaniala" Danny Kaleikini as he performed from the Hala!
Terrace of the Kahala Hilton or Loyal Garner, Melveed Leed, Keali'i Reichel and the Makaha Sons of Niihau the early years to present. Still one of my favorite groups, I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to have the Makaha Sons with friends Robi Kahakalau, Ernie Cruz, Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Pavao, Darlene Ahuna, Randy Lorenzo and Michael Grande in the 2nd Annual Na Mele O Hawaii Kalikimaka, performing here in Phoenix where their are so many transplanted Hawaiians and Friends who enjoy our music as well. Mahalo to all of you who keep the spirit of our music strong and alive, malama pono e Aloha nui Loa.

Bobby, what a nice message -- and wistful, I feel. Yes, there are many Hawaiian emigres in the Valley of the Sun. Thank you for being there, and doing what counts to keep traditional Hawaiian music present. Please e-mail me for a more extensive chat.

I too live in a desert, far from the calming seas of Hawaii where I lived for 3 years in Waikiki. then moved back to the mainland before Hawaii became a state. I play as much island music as I can find, and have old vinyls of Mahi Beamer, George Ka'ainapau, Alfred Apaka, Pua Almeida and ever so many local musicians who played the true music and chants. Kui Lee was a dear, dear friend. Can anyone tell me how Mahi and his siter Sunbeam are, and what they are doing? I ask this with a prayer that they are well and "doing." Mahalo hui loa, Barbara

Hello,
I was living and working in Las Vegas at the time they, Mahi & Sunbeam, were at the Stardust and my Husband and I lived with Sunbeam while our house was being built.
Sunbeam now lives in Rancho Mirage, Ca. and Mahi lives in Kaneohi, Oahu. I must try and contact them. If you do, please pass my email address on to them
Thanks, Mary
