| the song is called aloha kauai and was written by auntie maiki aiu, whos daughter colleen aiu still has a halau. this is a challenge hula auntie was originally from kauai the hulka has several kaona, and speaks of the women of kauai as being rare, smelling sweet, being beautiful and the proud of kauais poeple and the north shore of kauai this hula is kolohe for the first half and proud regal and elegant for the second half the lyrics and the interpretation can be found on mele.com aloha mokihana pua o kauai not a flower at all. this is the first line of the song it is a challenge. the mokihana is a sweet smelling licorice related berry that only grows on kauai iand is half of our lei. it is our flower. it is saying we are tight as berries when others are floppy flowers(laffs)...it is fun to dance, when other dancers are present, and is a sassy moment in the hula.can you guess the kaona?? wili ia me ka maile lau liilii....ka maile liilii.this is a sassy mooment as well..putting your lover on as a lei........ he ui onaone he aloha wau ia oe aloha aloha no kauai times three aloha no no kauai... ect look it up and have fun dancing and singing it... medium tempo, with lots of soul and heart is the best way aloha punohu |

Lei I Ka Mokihana is the correct title that my great-grandfather, Henry Wilfred Waiau penned the mele that is mostly (and mistakenly)known as "Maika`i Kaua`i." What is sung and heard most of the time is simply the chorus. Maika`i no Kaua`i, hemolele i ka malie, kuahiwi nani Wai`ale`ale, lei ana i ka mokihana... The Kaua`i Chorus was declared the winner of the 1925 Territorial Singing Contest which took place on June 17, 1925 at Oliver's Tabernacle in Honolulu. Have you found lyrics yet? There are more verses than what is heard today. Let me know if you still need help. I just came across of this looking for something else. Aloha. p.s. Aloha Kaua`i was composed by Auntie Maiki as a tribute to Kaua`i island and in honor of the wonderful hospitality that she received on her various visits to Kaua`i. Her hula lineage through her kumu, Auntie Lokalia Montgomery is linked back to Kaua`i island as well. It is a mele aloha and a mele pana. |
