| I enjoyed this song and did some research. The song, by Norman Kaye, was recorded by The Mary Kaye Trio, made up of his wife, Mary Ka'aihue Kaye and other musicians over the years. The trio made most of their career in Las Vegas, sometimes given credit for inventing the "lounge act". They also worked on soundtrack recordings and occasionally made Hawaiian albums. I believe the Kaye's are still living and occasionally performing in Las Vegas. Check out www.marykayetrio.com Jesse Tinsley |

| Norman Kaye may own the printed publishing rights, but the song's lyrics and music were composed by Norman Kane: http://www.squareone.org/Hapa/a1.html |

| this is also a kauai based song. isnt eyerything?...laffs. it is sung sweetly, and with soul, something that an instrument chord note cannot teach you. you sing it slowly, sweetly and with feeling if a woman, or with pride, with a rich voice, as a man seeing a woman whom you adore, if a man. this is the sole of hawaiian music be it auana or kahiko. much aloha, punohu |

I searched for the original words and music to this beautiful song. I could not find anyone who carries it or can even order it. It is definitely worth finding the real thing. I have had to sing it A Capella many times as I no longer am in possession of the sheet music. It is a sweet, slow, and meaningful love song. It remains my favorite. Please pass along any tips on finding vocal/piano/guitar sheet or recordings. Thanks sincerely, Melody |

Slight correction: Norman Kaye was Mary Ka'aihue's brother. The two and Frank Ross, as the Mary Kaye Trio, pioneered the "lounge act" by offering to sing in the bar (a new concept then) from 1 a.m to 6 a.m. At that time casinos closed at midnight. They were so successful in keeping patrons in the house in the wee hours that all the casinos went 24-hours. Jesse Tinsley |

Melody you said you were unable to find any CDs with A Maile Lei for Your Hair. Here are two that you should be able to get at Borders: Karen Kaleolani Keawehawai`i on Songs Of Old Hawaii Vol 1 and Nathan Aweau on E Apo Mai are two CDs that carry Maile Lei for Hair. Nathan Aweau's version is a more contemporary version. Karen's version keeps to the original version of the song. Bunny Brown's Hilo Hawaiians vinyl Bunny Brown's Hilo Hawaiians was released as a CD a few years ago. I like their version as well, but not sure if you can still get their CD. |

Welina mai ia kakou, The maile grows very high upon our mountains where it is cool. It is a vine-like bush that an untrained eye would not recognize as being the precious maile. It is precious indeed, and just as cherished whether bought at a lei stand or made by hand. In the old days, a guava stick, scored so as to make a nutcracker-like instrument was used to twist, or break the "skin" at the lowest point of the vine then pulled off or stripped from the bush. Like pruning a plant, this helps the bush to grow and therefore as stewards, you never over strip or take young liko vines. Only when the skin is broken, does it reveal it's beautiful scent. The lengths are then wound, and carefully tied together to make this precious lei. Imagine someone climbing the lush depths of Panaewa on the Big Island, or the ridges of Kaua'i or Ka'ala on the West end of 'Oahu. Then imagine that person stripping these carefully, the special time spent, communing with our nature aumakua, meditating on a loved one when fashioning this gift. Imagine even now, how much more precious a maile lei is considering that it has been harvested with careless abuse by others, and that what is more often sold IS NOT from our islands. Auwe! Uwe! And in case you wonder when a song or chant became romantic ... the answer to that is always and for all time. Our relationship with nature promotes writing in metaphors. Thus a thing of beauty is a ailona, an embodyment of spirit and emotions. Mahalo, Kanoemaile |

My father, Norman Kaye, wrote A MAILE LEI FOR YOUR HAIR for my mother. He is alive and well living in Las Vegas. He is 84 years old and never recieved a dime for that song. I am a record company owner looking to retrieve the license to that song and find out who has been recieving the royalties to get my father paid. I believe you can hear his original rendition at www.mperia.com and search for Mary Kaye Trio. You can read about The Mary Kaye Trio at www.lvhps.org and search for Mary Kaye. Also their is information about him at www.marykayetrio.com and www.normankaye.com |

There are two websites to check for composer info -- The Harry Fox Agency, and ASCAP/BMI Harry Fox had nothing for this song, but ASCAP/BMI had your dad's name (no contact info though). You might want to contact them -- there could be a big royalty check looking for an owner! http://www.ascap.com/ |
