Paul, Just check www.huapala.com, the song is there. Only two chords for this song - the tonic and dominant 7th chord. |

I believe that the He‘eia depicted in the song is the one near Keauhou on Hawai‘i island. It was a well known surfing spot for ali‘i. Kihei De Silva wrote a fairly extensive examination and analysis of the mele, though I am at a loss to locate it. I thought it was on the Ka‘iwakiloumoku site, but it's not there now. |

I also wanted to know where He'eia was when Bulla Ka'iliwai recorded the song on Na Hulukupuna. He and JayJay Akiona took me to a small bay in Keauhou, Hawai'i Island. It's at the end of the largest holua slide in Hawai'i. Because of development along that coast, it's difficult to imagine it as an ali'i surfing spot. Nevertheless, there's a feeling . . . It's marked on the U. of Hawai'i Press map. There is another He'eia on O'ahu, but Bulla recorded the song for the Hawai'i Island spot. |
