Paul,

I have often wondered what happen to Linda Dela Cruz. Hawaii should really have a "Where are they now?" listing, huh? She was one of Hawaii's premiere female entertainers of the 1950's and 60's and known world-wide as Hawaii's Canary and leader of the famous Halekulani Girls. Those of us who remember (now I'm showing my age) can recall those beauties in their flowing holokus and adorned with Bird of Paradise in their hair. Oh, such lovelies they were. I'll never forget those days in Waikiki when Hawaiian music sang out at just about every hotel. Today, it is gone and this is the only reason I don't go into Waikiki anymore. It simply isn't Hawaiian without the Hawaiian entertainers. Back then hotels never had to worry about occupancy. You'd think they'd catch on by now, wouldn't you? They deserve to be worried about business today.

If we had people like Linda back in Waikiki, well, imagine what it would be like. There are many female entertainers in Waikiki today. But none come close to Linda and the women of her day. Todays younger female entertainers lack class and glamour and showman(woman)ship. Those days can never be recaptured.

Linda is now a trustee for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Call her and tell her you miss her.

Thanks for reminding me of a beautiful woman we all admired. You'd think they'd honor her at the Hoku's or put her into Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. Politics, you know.

where are the halekulani girls now. I bought their album "twilight at Halekulani in the early 60's. We were fortunate to hear "The Girls" once or twice at the Halekulani, Hawaii was home then. We have sinced moved to the mainland and occasionally bring out our albums to enjoy the Hawaiian music as it used to be played best. Any information on these ladies would be helpful. I think it was in 1995 or 96 that Ms. Alice Fredlund (was she also called Auntie Alice) sand at the funeral of Dr. Simeon Akaka.. We were fortunate to be stationed with the government then for 4 wonderful years back home. Just remenising! Aloha-the Sullivans

Where ever you are,be it spritual, in one's memory or here in the heart of so many people, know you have brought wonderful memories for me while growing up, here in California. I first heard your voice when my mother moved here after her divorce from my dad (William K Haupu Jr.) Your album was played always during the days when we lived in San Francisco, my mom worked at the Presido/Letterman General Hospital at that time. I basically grew up with your music, because it was homegrown and something solid for me to hold on to. I am one of six children born and raised in Waimanalo and then transplanted here in the mainland. Through the years I lost the album, and hoped that one day I would be able to find it again, which I've done today. It only took 25 years, but better late than never. I am ordering this in memory of my mother Rebecca Kahakulani Rodrizues born in Honolulu/Oahu. I miss her, but this album will bring so much joy and wonderful memories of one of the best times of
my life. I am a mother of 11 children, ages 7 through 28, this album will be my gift to share a part of myself with them. Family is essential but shared memories are a priceless gift.

Less than two months ago I bought some of her albums, in mint condition, from e-bay. You just need to check into the record or music listings individually described by seller. It was a real find for me and I wish you the same good luck!

Hi Paul, my name is Bird, I am the niece of Noe Noe Hopkins Chai, she played stand up bass with the Halekulani girls in the early 60's til they broke up. I am going home to Hawaii for Thanksgiving. My mom has all of their albums. My brother and I plan on putting them on CD depending on their condition. I cannot believe that someone wants to hear their music...they were so cool, way ahead of their time, musically and personally. They were real wahinis of the old school. My phone number in San Francisco is 415-505-3944. If you are interested in getting some of their music, give me a call, I will try my best to do that for you. Aloha for now, Bird

If you end up putting these wonderful records on CD, please let me knowas I'd like to buy copies. I grew up in Hawaii and it was a big treat for me to get to go to the Halekulani with the "grownups" and listen to the beautiful music of "The girls" and my well-worn vinyl copy of "Twilight at the Halekulani" is getting a bit worse for wear. (The BEST rendition of E Huli Makou EVER, by the way!!)

Oh my God I'm one of their biggest fans. I wish someone would reproduce their music on to CD and better yet someone should do a video Documentary of this women. I'm a teacher and I had just assigned my students an assignment on these ladies. However there is no information out there about them. No Biography or history. They left us a legacy of awesome hawaiian music with style and grace, harmony and elegance. Today's hawaiian music is of another culture taken from someone else's. I'm trying to teach my students that we have our own style, listen to the legends like aunty Linda Dela Cruz, Aunty Genoa Keawe, Leina'ala Haili, Myrtle K Hilo, Naughty Annie, Uncle Little Jo with No HuHu, Myra English,Emma Veary and the list goes on. But where are their stories for the younger generation? We need to bring back the Nahenahe music. Get us going Raiatea Helm, bring it back. I'll be more than willing to help someone get it started? I'm pretty sure there are grant's or something to help
to preserve these legends for the future generation.

Any mana'o contact me @ 808 982-0740 or e-mail me at punatita7 @yahoo.com

Forever in Hawaiian Music,
Piilani
