Aloha...

I understand that during the late 20's to 50's a singer by
Emma Bush was fairly well known. I heard her sing on a record
the song "kalamaula". Is there many others and can you tell me
what her status in Hawaiian Music history.

Aloha Kaua,

Emma Bush lived in the Kapahulu area on O'ahu and popularized many songs such as "'Alekoki" (probably the one she was most known for) and "Pauoa Ka Liko Lehua." The recording you are referring to was made on Brunswick Records in 1928. She also recorded "Kaimuki Hula" at the same time (listed as "Puana Ka Makani E" on the record label). Her voice was strong and it had an unpretentious quality. What people enjoyed was the earthy way she expressed lyrics. She was a friend of my maternal grandmother and she also claimed a relation to her but if she really is related to my family, I do not know how.
