Aloha,

everyone knows the famous Kawika-Chant.

http://www.huapala.org/Kawika.html

The 3rd verse:

Ku`i e ka lono Pelekani ea
Ho`olohe ke ku`ini `o Palani

The official translation:

News reached England
Also heard by the French queen

How is meant with "ku`ini `o Palani" - "Queen of France"?

When Kalakaua travelled to Europe in 1881, France was already a republic. There was no queen of France anymore.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Third_Republic

There was not even a former queen alive.

I found nothing about his visited to France, but Kalakaua was in Paris in 1881 on his way from Italy to England.

So who heard the News? Who is meant with ku'ini `o Palani – the queen of France?

Is this a wrong translation?
