A bass viol was brought over on the Thaddeus in 1820 with the pioneer missionary group by George Humehume Kaumuali'i. In August of 1824 at the time of the Kauai revolt, the bass was given to Samuel Whitney to "keep for the church". In 1829 Hiram Bingham describes a bass viol used at a service in honolulu. In 1843 a bass viol is played by a lad at Haili church in hilo, according to Sarah Lyman's journal. Does anyone know if this is the same bass viol, and whether the instrument still exists? Thank you. |

| Dear Mr. Warne: I read your posting on the bass Viol. I am writing a book on this very subject. It will most probably be a major motion picture. I regret to tell you I don't want to give you any of my secrets. Thank you and good bye. |
