Does anyone know where I can hear a version of the chant for the Law of the Splintered Paddle? It was referenced in Aunty Nona Beamers book but it was not on the tape. I am interested in learning the chant...I do have the words in Hawaiian and English. Mahalo! 'Ohu |

Ke Känäwai O Mämalahoe E nä känaka E mälama 'oukou i ke akua A e mälama ho'i i ke kanaka nui a me ke kanaka iki: E hele ka 'elemakule, ka luahine, a me ke kama A moe i ke ala he mea näna e hopilikia, Hewa nö, make! The Law of the Splintered Paddle O my people, Honor thy god Respect alike (the rights of) men great and humble; See to it that our aged, our women, and our children Lie down to sleep by the roadside, Without fear of harm. Disobey, and die! This chant is based on the proclamation of a law made by Kamehameha I after an incident when a fisherman splintered a canoe paddle over the great ali'i’s head. It was a statement of forgiveness for the fisherman and his companion. This law guarantees the safety of travelers. I HOPE THAT THIS HELPS....I GOT IT FROM A BOOK OF THE SAME NAME AT THE LIBRARY...IT IS A SLIM PAPERBACK BOOK AND HAS THE STORY IN IT. ALOHA, 'OHU |
