I was hoping someone might be able to answer a question for me anyway? I got this link from Yahoo, doing a search on Hawiian Language and Culture.

I watched a National Geographic or PBS special many years ago about Hawiian volcanoes. They talked about a word that the Hawiians use for areas where the lava will make "islands" of undamaged terrain. The phonetic word for this was something like "kapooku". I believe the narrator said the word means "island of life", or something to that effect.

I was hoping someone here might know the actual word, and any background on it. Or, if nothing else, could hopefully point me in thr right direction. I have searched the web (for several hours now) to no avail!

Thanks

Dara, the word you heard is "kapuku" which means "to restore life". However, a submerged island, such as the one being built by the lava now flowing into the ocean Kilauwea, is "moku kele". The word for island is "mokupuni". The Hawaiian Islands is "Ko Hawaii pae aina". You can find all Hawaiian word definitions in the Hawaiian Dictionary (Pukui & Elbert) which should be on reference in most major libraries -- certainly in the Library of Congress. Caution however: Don't try to define a song title or lyrics by looking up single dictionery words. Meanings are often buried, and words strung together in sentences/verses may have a slightly different translation.

The Hawaiian Dictionary (1986) by Pukui & Elbert, at pg. 156, lists the following:
1. kipuka: a clear place or oasis within a lava bed where there may be vegetation.
2. kipohopoho: a snall arable patch surrounded by lava beds, smaller than a kipuka.
Hope this helps.
Aloha

We want to name out new boat "Sweet Kate", but in Hawaiian. I see quite a few words for "sweet", and I hope the one I have chosen is ok to use.
Is " Kuhikuhi Keke " ok to use?
Also, is it pronounced: ku-hiku-hi
or : kuhi-kuhi
