The "bible" of Hawaiian music history from early chant thru at least the 1960's of contemporary Hawaiian music, is George Kanahele's "Hawaiian Music and Musicians - an Illustrated History" (UH Press 1972 - out of print)

This is an extensive well-researched encyclopedic history, detailed in every way possible about forms of music, musicians, vocalists, composers, instruments (all over the world), with a bibliography. You should find a copy in most major library reference sections. I know there's one in the NY Public Library.

Bishop Museum has an extensive collection of Hawaiian music and history.

This site will be covering more Hawaiian music history very shortly.
