I was fortunate to attend the first annual Waikiki International Hula Conference. (Nov. 15-17) and I must say I was blown away by the "talk stories" I attended with Kuuipo Kumukahi. I can't say how much being in her presence and listening to her mana'o has breathed new life in Hawaiian music for me. I feel like a kid again opening up presents on Christmas when I listen to songs that I've listened to thousands of times before. There is so much I've missed over these years and I'm just excited to learn more about hawaiian mele, and truly be able to appreciate the great poetry that truly makes Hawaiian music the greatest in the world. The International Waikiki Hula Conference also introduced me to Na Lani 'Eha. To witness the passion that Aunty Kuuipo has when discussing and singing the songs on Na Lani 'Eha is truly inspiring. I'm saddened with myself that I've overlooked how truly great these songs are. Thank You To Kuuipo Kumukahi and the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame for continuing to perpetuate Hawaiian Music. To anyone who may have missed this years Hula Conference, keep an ear out and make sure to attend next years. The knowledge that is shared there is overwhelming and is a must for anyone involved in Hula or Hawaiian Mele. |
