Subject: Hawaiian Guitar - an HI invention

Speaking of steel guitar, did you know that Hawaiian steel guitar is the only Hawaiian instrument invented IN Hawai'i? You may be able to find the story at website. It was a happy accident made by a Kamhehameha student who is said to have dropped a nail(?) on the strings of his guitar which was sitting on his lap. The musical sound it made intrigued him. He began picking at the strings/moving the nail(?) across the strings and producing sweet music. Until the 1960's, when groups like the Beatles took over the music scene, every well-known Hawaiian orchestra/quartet/backup group included steel guitar by well-known musicians. Today, the best known artist is probably Alan Akaka who can be heard regularly with Auntie Genoa's group, on Thursday nites at the Hawaiian Regent hotel (I think) in Waikiki. Check it out.
