John Piilani Watkins, the hula instructor, composer, recording artist, musician and entertainer, composed this song for a place that was once known as "Damon Tract" out in the area where the Honolulu International Airport now largely occupies. John Piilani Watkins lived at Watertown where the Hickam Air Force Base is now located and had family and friends who lived at Kaloaloa. Kaloaloa was famous for its crown flowers and in this song, they are referred to as diamond gems. This song with its translation and annotations, and hundreds of others, comprises the "Kimo Alama Keaulana Mele Collection" in the Bishop Museum Archives where the public may go and do research at. |

Many, many fond memories of Damon Tract and St Philomena's church and sweet sour seeds at Mr. Joes, that I will take to the grave. Mahalo for the memories. |

My first memories are of living in Damon Tract. My family lived on E Road and I remember sitting on the second floor porch watching planes taxi around the runway at the old John Rodgers Airport. Must have been around 1956,57 or so. Was told by my father that he stood on the roof of the house on December 7, 1941 and watched as Japanese planes buzzed over head. Good thing he didn't get shot or I guess I would not be here typeing this e-mail. Would be great to see some old photo's of the area and hear some of the stories. Anyone know of an old map of Damon Tract? would be intresting to overlay that map over a modern map to see where all the old sites were. |

Hi. There was a young man across the street from us who was a soloist at St. Philomena's church (Father Morris was the pastor) in the mid-1950's. He had a beautiful voice. Went to his house once if my memory serves me right. It could very well have been 470 Q Road, but again, the time frame was 1955-1956. And a Mrs. Pacheco lived just beyond us. All the best. I attended the 1st and 2nd grade at Kaloaloa. My teachers were Miss Arakawa and Mrs. Chang. St Philomena's church was adjacent to the school I believe. I remember having a silly little ring blessed by the priest. I remember the carnival festivities held on the church grounds - EK Fernandez, hot malasadas, the booth games and rides! We lived in quonset huts on the main road leading into Damon Tract. I am astonished about how much I am remembering about this! |
