Does anyone know who wrote the song "Cafe Life"? And what year it was written? I know of two versions -- one by the Moonlighters, recorded in 2001, and the other by Panama Dave Baptiste, record in 1963 at the Beachboy Party with Waltah Clarke. I have heard that it was written by Splash Lyons... any truth in this? And were any earlier versions recorded? Any help would be great.

Mahalo.

Aloha:
The song you are inquiring about has been referred to as both "Cafe' Life" and "Waikiki Is Good Enough For Me".
Sorry, never heard of "The Moonlighters" cover from 2001, but have heard the "Beachboy Party" cover of 1963. I've also heard the cover by Emporer Hanapi of 1982. The earlier recording you have heard about is by "Freckles Lyons & his Beachboys". However, brother Kepo'ika'i "Splash" Lyons did play steel in Freckles' band, and Freckles did play guitar in Splash's band, so that between the two of them they were always working. The tune is a collaboration by Hazel Hollinger and Frances "Freckles" Lyons. "Freckles" referred to the title as "Waikiki Is Good Enough For Me".
I'll be playing the music of "Freckles & Splash Lyons" on my radio program, "Territorial Airwaves" again at the end of July, 2008, and I will definitely play this song. Check it out on demand at www.am940hawaii.com.
Mahalo plenty,
