| ula noweo is not a christian song. it is an old chant for ha'ena which speaks about the naue area. and the fragrance of the hala fruit there when it is in bloom. it is a love song for the area and for a person, and it is also associated with the mohala flower also from the area. it talks about the red glow of the air that occurs there at certain times when the mist and sun hit it at sunrise and sunset. i am from there, so i now this. mahalo ula noweo |

| Mahalo for your response to Ula Noweo, wow, how fortunate you are to live in such a beautiful place (just picturing your description of it). By any chance, would you know who is Kamoha'i? mahalo |

Aloha kakou, I'm confused about a "biblical translation" as `Ula Noweo is a name chant honoring Queen Emma. Kamoha`i is one of her names. |

This chant honors Kamoha`i, a Kaua`i chief and praises the natural beauty of Hanalei Valley & Nohili. |

Ula Noweo was written for Queen Emma Na'ea Rooke (Wife to King Kamehameha IV, Alexander Liholiho) who founded the Queens Memorial Hospital (Which still stands in Honolulu today, and if you are Hawai'ian, they HAVE to treat you). It was the first hospital in Hawai'i. On May 20, 1858 she gave birth to her son, Prince Albert Edward Kauikeaouli, the first heir to the throne. At age four, Prince Albert dies of an unknown illness, sending King Kamehameha IV into 15 months of depression and asthma attacks that finally take his life at the early age of 29. Losing bother of her kinds, Queen Emma takes on the name Kaleleonalani, meaning "Flight of Chiefs". I hope this information is useful to you. ~Sampaguita |

I learned this dance in the style of 'Iolani Luahine and I was told Kamoha'i was an old chief from the island of Kaua'i. 'Ula Noweo honored him. One of his descendants was Queen Kapi'olani. When she traveled to Kaua'i the people re-dedicated 'Ula Noweo to her. A nickname for Kapi'olani on the Island of Kaua'i was Kamoha'i. The people said he was like her ancestor. I was told that mele honors her as well as her ancestor Kamoha'i. hope this helps. aloha |

Aloha. Yes, there isn't a lot of info on Kamoha'i, however, like the previous posts, what I know and was told about when learning this chant that Kamoha'i was an ancient Kaua'i chief. |
