Aloha,

I think she was the artist for the song, Ka Manu. I am trying to find the history or meaning of the song. Dennis Pavao has it on his CD, All Hawai'i Stand Together. Any info would be appreciated. Websites, books, etc.

Mahalo,

Leilani

Leilani, Look in the telephone directory for Kimo Alama Keaulana in Manoa. He has Alice Namakelua songbook which contains over 100 songs. Give him a call, he is the best resource around.

Lyrics and translation for the song, are included in the liner notes of Dennis Pavao's CD -- lots of kaona in these lyrics, folks!:

Aunty Alice learned this song when she was young from the young man who composed it. It is a sad love song about two young people in love who never had a chance to let their love for one another realize itself to its fullest. When my teacher, Adeline Nani Maunupau Lee, passed away in 1992, she had left her things to me. Among them, Aunty Alice Namakelua's own song books. Aunty Alice was Aunty Adeline's co-worker and friend. I had learned many of her mele from both of these women.

Does anyone have a source for slack-key recordings by Ms. Namakelua? Thank you.

The only commercial recording of Auntie's slack key playing is the 1974 Hula LP "Auntie Alice Namakelua," HS-552, long out of print. Most of the tracks are vocals with uke accompaniment, but there are three slack key pieces, including one instrumental, "Paniolo Slack Key." I have also heard samples from interview tapes held by the Bishop Museum.

The other way to get an idea of Auntie's playing is from a piece on sevaral of Keola Beamer's instructional books and videos, titled variously "A Grandmother's Wish," or "Auntie Alice Namakelua Slack Key," or "Namakelua's Tune." Note that Keola's reconstructions are in B-flat wahine, where (according to George Winston) the LP tracks are in G wahine slacked down a step or more.
