Joann, I believe you are actually talking about two different hapahaole songs: Hukilau Song and I Wanna Go Back to My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua Hawaii (I think the title is shorter than that on that last one). You should be able to obtain both from the Honolulu City Library, Pacific Islands section, or email the Hawaiian Language Resources Center in Honolulu. They can also be found in a video/book Beginner Hula set from Hilo Hattie's (there's a Hilo Hattie's in California, another one in Tempe, Arizona, and of course Hawaii). Hope this helps (if you need the email addresses for the above, please feel free to email me at Lealeahula@juno.com. Aloha, Christi

Lyrics to "Hukilau", "My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua" and even "Tiny Bubbles" can be found at http://www.huapala.org/

This website contains lyrics to many, many Hawaiian songs and is a veritable gold mine.
The lyrics posted are from composer's families, sheet music, research and old family song collections, some dating from the 1930's.
The site author, Kaiulani Kanoa-Martin, does it all for nothing, and can use financial support and sponsorship.

Although this song was written in English, Amy Gilliom released a Hawaiian-language version on her "Nostalgia" CD with Willie K. Liner notes include the lyrics for all the songs:

this web site has some of the lyrics. My great uncle, Ellsworth Cozzens was one of the writers of the song, although it is difficult to locate any mention of him. some song sheets give him credit, others do not. Here is the url to see;

my own family tree site is at;

We're Going To A Hukilau

oh, we're going to a hukilau
a huki, huki, huki huki, huki-lau
everybody loves the hukilau
where the lau- lau is the kau-kau
at the great luau

We throw our nets out into the sea
and all the ama-ama come swimmin' to me
oh, we're going to a hukilau
a huki, huki, huki, huki-lau

What a wonderful day for fishing
the old hawaiian way
well, the huki-lau nets go swishin
down by old la-i-e bay

oh, we're going to a hukilau
a huki, huki, huki,
huki, huki, huki, huki-lau

Does anyone know if there is piano sheet music for "Hukilau" anywhere out there? I've looked on the internet, and all I'm finding is ukulele music, which doesn't help me much. Please write back as soon as possible. A hui hou.

Does anyone happen to know the lyrics to the second verse of the Hukilau song? The version I have on CD is by Don Ho, and has an extra verse that I can;t quite get all the words to, and they don't seem to be anywhere on the web. I am trying to teach it to the girls in my Girl Scout troop, becasue we are doing it as a hula for the parents at our end of the year luau party in two weeks. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I don't know of any second verse for "The Hukilau Song" unless it's this:
What a wonderful day for fishing
The old Hawaiian way.
All the hukilau nets are swishing
Down in old La'ie Bay.

Let me know if this helps any, and please respond if you happen to find piano music for it. Mahalo.

Forgive me if I don't spell the Hawaiian lyrics right.

I wanna go back to my little grass shack in Kealakekua Hawai`i.
I wanna be with all the kane and wahine that I used to know.
I can hear the old guitars a playing on the beach at Ho`onaunau.
I can hear the old Hawaiian saying,
E komo mai no ka ua i ka haole welakahau.
It won't be long till my ship will be sailing back to Kona,
A grand old place that's always fair to see.
I'm just a little Hawaiian and a homesick island boy.
I wanna go back to my fish and poy.
I wanna go back to my little grass shack in Kealakekua Hawai`i,
Where the humuhumunukunukuapua'a goes swimming by.
Where the humuhumunukunukuapua'a goes swimming by.

Aloha, I was searching for piano notes for the song hukilau for my sons 2nd grade class.

I followed the link from Ti Collins:
http://www.geocities.com/dhc2020/h-hukilau.htm

I downloaded the midi file (cheesy computer music file)

I went to http://www.8notes.com/midi_sheet_music/

I uploaded the midi file and it converted it to sheet music. I don't know how good it is because I am musically illiterate, but I think it is a good start.

I spell the phrase in English phonetics, I think!
To me this meant "oh come with me your beautiful man" or vice versa, or it meant flattery, something good to say that would give favor.

I thought I remembered it in The Little Grass Shack lyrics but don't see it here.

My grandparents went to Hawaii from Missouri in 1912. My mom and uncles and cousins were all born there. Just curous what it really means and what songs it is used in. I am sure it is used in a very common hula. My Little Grass Shack is probably the most common, taught in every YWCA in the nation, but don't see that phrase there.

I am not spelling right, I am sure.

Maybe something can help.

Enjoyed the words and history of "I wanna go back to my little grass shack".

I am looking for an mp3 file I could use in a home DVD about building grass shacks. Even better would be a video clip showing the hula steps for each phrase.

On the CD "Hukilau Hulas" the song "My Little Grass Shack" is number 2. "Hukilau" is on it too... number 1. That was the first Hawaiian music CD I ever had.

Or should I say, mostly hapa haole.

Posted on 3/8/07 at 12:49pm

I didn't see a clear answer to the 10-24-05 TRANSLATION query by Doug Smith. The song My Little Grass Shack has the phrase - "Komo mai no kâua i ka hale welakahao" -, and I'm still seeking a translation.

I've heard that "E komo mai" means Welcome, or come in. I've heard that "welakahao" is routhly translated as Whoopee. Anyone got a full translation of this phrase?

Subject: Welakahao! [lyrics to "My Little Grass Shack"]
Posted on 6/12/07 at 7:09pm

OK, I've got it!!

These are the literal translations:

KOMO MAI = come (toward me)
NO KAUA = you
I KA HALE = to the house
WELAKAHAO = wela ka hao =
WELA = hot
THE FORCE = force

Now, if that's not enough for an extrapolation, here's the proof. In the song, I WANT TO LEARN TO SPEAK HAWAIIAN © 1935, lyrics and music written by Johnny Noble, this is what you find in the fourth verse:

"Honi kaua wikiwiki [means "let's kiss quickly," ed.]
"They taught me on the beach at Waikiki
"Welakahao (meaning whoopee)
"I am learning them fast you can see"

In the line "Welakahao (meaning whoopee)," the parenthesized phrase is part of the lyric, not my addition. You can see for yourself at: http://www.squareone.org/Hapa/i11.html.

FYI: along with Bill Cogswell and Tommy Harrison, Johnny Noble co-wrote "My Little Grass Shack" © 1933

Mystery solved!!
