Two places to check: For history and background - "Hawaiian Music & Musicians", which encylopedia should be available in major public and university libraries. Or, best, write directly to well-known Hawaiian music archivist: John Marsden, 218 Bannerdale Rd., Sheffield S119FE, England. John has all infor on steel players/Hawaiian musicians who performed regularly overseas.

Harry-
My father used to play guitar with the band back in the late 1950's. He passed away in the latter part of the 1990's. I remember as a young child watching the band rehearse for an album at a studio in Hilversum. Rudy did visit our home occasionally in Den Haag to discuss and practice certain parts of their music. In fact, I was told by my mother that she was asked by Rudy at one point to sing with the band after he had heard her sing a song. She declined and they ended up with a singer by the name of Ilse. My father did write and sang lead on a song called "Rock and Roll and Breezes" for one of their albums.

Rudi Wairata

Rudi Wairata died in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) 15 july 1981.
I made an LP (now on CD) dedicated to Rudi Wairata with 12 titels in his famous style.
This year again I made a CD THE HONOLULU MINSTRELS 'How d'ya do?' with 16 titels with other material and again with some Wairata pieces.
The members of the Wairata band MENA MOERIA MINSTRELS all passes away. The last one, Joop Sahanaya, two years ago.

Hawaiiangroup AROMBAI directed by Minggus Matulessy (labsteelguitar) do a lot of songs from famous Rudi Wairata with his famous Mena Moeria Minstrels. I do remember that Minggus played (on labsteel) their famous tune The Royal Hawaiian Hula together with Rudi W. (on guitar) at home of Jack Salakory (on bass). On about 10 years ago Arombai played also with Joop Sahanaya. He recommanded Arombai to change name of the group into New Mena Moeria Minstrels, because he recognized his own MMM sound within Arombai. Our CD Hela Arombai (2003)is full with songs from this famous MMM.
We, Arombai are glad to met these famous members of MMM and our maintask now is to continue their beautifull MMM-sound.

Kindly regards,
AROMBAI

Polydor 11536 Honolulu / Sweet Sue, just you
Polydor 11537 Sweet Hawaiian Chimes / Kilauea's Nightfall
Polydor 11539 Bundle of Blues / Hawaiian Paradise

Wanda & Joyce

Aloha Joyce,

I'm 'Mahealani' (Vilda Butteling-von Arnoldi), the daughter of singer Bill Toma, who used to sing with Joyce Aubrey and Wanda, since my father was the leadsinger of famous George de Fretes' THE ROYAL HAWAIIAN MINSTRELS.

(For me: auntie)Joyce Aubrey already died many years ago in The Hague, at that time I lived there too with my parents, where she suddenly died at home. I still remember the days we also spend together vacationing in Spain where my parents and I visited her at her vacation home in the south of Spain, high above on a mountain. It was great to know her.

Wanda is as far as I know still in America(?). Many years ago, when I visited her father, who also used to live in California, George de Fretes (who was married to Joyce Aubrey and then both got Wanda).
George de Fretes was my father's closest friend, they knew each other since they were little boys and started playing music together...
When I have more news about Wanda, I'll send you a mail, ok?

Until then, ALOOOOOOOHA....

I have MMM album (speed 33) where 'ticklin the strings' is titled as 'Pua Jka Lani'. This must be a mistake!? Beautiful Hawaii is the title of the album.
I'm sure it's a mistake because I also have a speed-78 Rudy Wairata & his MMM(1957-Omega) which features each of the above mentioned songs, one on each side.

BTW, love Rudy's style.

Rudy Wairata

Hi,
Rudy Wairata and my father (John Wairata)are cousins. Uncle Rudy is the son of Andy Wairata (the big brother of Luke Wairata - my father's father). My father often mention about uncle Rudy, but honestly I had never imagine (untill today) that he was that great to some Hawaiian Music fans. The best lap steel player of all time? Wow..

de grote Theo Ehrlicher

Beste Iris,
