Hilo Hawaiians -Who's Original?

Does anybody know about the history of a music group called „The Original Hilo Hawaiians“? I only found a reference to a vocal group: Bunny Brown's Hilo Hawaiians (Boysen Brown, Bunny Brown, Elson "Bobo" Brown, Kihei Brown, Arthur Kaua, Savella "Moto" Modesto), but what I have in my collection is an instrumental album. It sounds quite authentic compared to the Dutch, German, or Indonesian stuff and features trebly steel guitar and a deep,clear vibraphone. Did they do this sort of thing? The name „Hilo Hawaiians“ also appears on German 78s and vinyl singles from the early 50s. Ensemble led by Harald Banter (a radio conductor), but well... TRACKLIST: Ta Hu Wauwai, Aloha Oe, Hano Hano, Wailana, My Honolulu Hula Girl, Waipio, Mauai Gal, Va Like No Like, Waikiki Love Chant, Makala Pua, Kalena Kai, Beautiful Kahana. The Hilo Hawaiians -- the group whose members you've listed above -- were indeed vocalists, and never released any all-instrumental recording. In fact, I don't think they even performed any all-instrumental tunes... Unfortunately, there was an era when any group -- no matter if they were based in Germany or Canada or wherever -- would seize upon a name they felt identified them as Hawaiian...when, of course, they were actually far removed from Hawai`i. I just did a quick google search for The Original Hilo Hawaiians and found just one vinyl -- definitely German -- titled "Paradies Hawaii" (mis-spelled, as listed). |

That's the one! Besides „liner notes“ (in German, English and French!) that tell you everything about flowers, pineapples and clear blue sky, and nothing about musicians, instruments and recordig studios there is music with a certain sloppyness and cheerfulness, which made me think it is a genuine hawaiian production. I learned about another one, that also sets new standards in misspelling: Kaino Koiotito-s Hilo-Hawaiians :“Hawaiin Holiday“. Falcon L-ST 7126 |

I bought a record for 89 cents entitled "Hilo Hawaiians Honeymoon in Hawaii" It is Bunny Brown and his vocal group, however there are some great instrumentals with steel guitar as well It was released by a label called Hawaii Hosts and the mailing address is in Honolulu, so they are definitely the real thing.. The harmonies are gorgeous, and the production is good, sounds good on my turntable.. It says on the liner notes that they traveled the world, and also played the Seattle Worlds Fair. They made it as far as Japan where they performed for victims of the Hiroshima blast.. No dates anywhere on the record however.. Barry S. |

Bunny Brown and the Hilo Hawaiians hail from Hilo Hawai'i. Bunny, Bobo, and Boyson are father and 2 sons. The other members of the group are Arthur Kaua and Savella Modesto. They did that one album called Bunny Brown's Hilo Hawaiians. Bobo and Boyson had a group called the Shades of Brown and played at the Naniloa Hotel and the old Orchid Isles Hotel. In fact they had several different groups throughout the years that they entertained. They even played at the King Kamehameha Hotel in Kailua-Kona. It was a yearly week-end gig. Bunny browns group consisting of himself, Arthur and Moto played at the Waiakea Village and the Old Hilo Hotel. Bunny also played in the Dining Room of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. The Brown's are a legendary musical family in Hilo. Great voices and wonderful all around music. How would I know? They are my hanai family and I grew up with them from when I was just a kid. A beautiful family with lots of Aloha. I love you Dad, Bobo and Boy. I will go home for a visit this year. I miss you all. |

Aloha: The original "Hilo Hawaiians" played together from 1956 to 1963. They recorded several LPs and traveled extensively. That first group featured Edward “Mona” Kalima on bass, William “Bunny” Brown on guitar, Buddy and Thomas “Kihei” Brown on ukuleles, and Arthur Kaua on steel guitar. Bunny Brown reorganized the "Hilo Hawaiians" in 1964 for a long running gig at Hilo’s famed Naniloa Hotel. This group featured Bunny’s two sons, Boysen K. Brown on guitar and Elson “Bobo” K. Brown on ukulele, joined by Savella “Moto” Modesto on bass. Arthur Kaua remained the group’s steel guitarist. On June 14, 1970, Bob Lang engineered the Bunny Brown's Hilo Hawaiians recording you are referring to. The Bill Murata production for Lehua Records was recorded at the Sounds of Hawaii studio in Honolulu. Mahalo plenty, Harry B. Harry B.
