I've been told that Joe Keawe, the great falsetto singer, was a distant, perhaps only hanai, relative and I'm trying to find out more about him and where to find his recordings besides the album he recorded in the late 1970's (great album) that is currently available.
Does anyone know how he got his start?
Does anyone know much about his years in California, or how he was related to Auntie Genoa's husband? Any info is appreciated.

I was told that Joe Keawe was a ship hand on the "Humuula," an interisland steamer. My uncle was its captain. Joe Kewae could be heard singing on this ship for all the passengers, mainly Hawaiians, who traveled via steerage passage. Later, he was one of 49th State Records early recording artists. These recordings are in the hands of collectors and others but a few, I believe, were released on CD on the Cord International label. Joe Keawe's surname is a shortened form of "Keawemauhili," different from Aunty Genoa's late husband.

Yes, he was an awesome singer!
Joe Keawe was my uncle, my Dad Frank being his younger brother. There were 3 boys born to his family: John, Joseph, and Frank Keawe - all of whom have passed on, rest their souls. They hail from the Ali'i Bloodline of Keawemauhili - once the chief of the Big Island, prior to Kamehameha unifying the Hawaiian Islands. The name Keawemauhili was then shortened to Keawe for one reason or another, as did many Hawaiians with a similar Keawe_ _ _ _ last name, making it difficult in modern day to distinguish which Keawe's were related to other Keawe's. With similar exceptional singing styles and talent, Uncle Joe was unfortunately not related to Auntie Genoa, as she hailed from a different Keawe bloodline.

Unfortunately I know very little about my Uncle Joe,since my Dad Frank (the last to be born) was was given away at birth to a childless couple, the Lia's. The Keawemauhili's already having been blessed with 2 sons; Joe & John, generously gave my Dad to the Lia's. I grew up thinking my Dad was an only child. It wasn't until I was nearly an adult that I discovered my Dad was hanai (adopted), and that he had 2 real brothers, one of whom was the famous Hawaiian singer Joe Keawe. I knew very little about my Uncle Joe, but I do know a few things:
His parents were: Joe Keawe Mauhili and Hattie Kia. (Note the modern variation in the placement and spelling of his Dad's name, thus the modern day adaption of Keawe being Joe's last name.)

I believe he was the middle son - but I could be mistaken. He was self-taught on musical instruments and his voice was a god-given gift. He married and raised a family in California, and owned a Restaurant/Bar named Joe's Place. I'm not sure if it's still around - I think it was located in Southern California.

NO ONE does a better rendition of 2 songs:
Pua Lilia and God Bless My Daddy, than Joe Keawe - they can bring you to tears. I'm not sure which Album you're referring to, but these 2 (AWESOME!) songs can be found on a CD called "Hawaii's Falsetto - Joe Keawe Returns." It may be a hard CD to find but try Tower Records in Hawaii - it would be well worth the effort to locate it.

I wish I could give you more information on my Uncle Joe, but my Dad passed away a few years ago and took much of that knowledge with him. If you are adamant about gathering more info on him, he has a nephew (his brother John's son) that lives in Hawaii that reclaimed the family's REAL name. His name is Frank Keawemauhili. He lives on Oahu. Frank could give you so much more insight into Uncle Joe's personal life & career. You may also try researching the last name Keawe in the Southern California area - I believe he has some surviving children.

Good luck...I hope I was helpful in some little way. Aloha Pumehana.
(P.S. Sorry it's such a belated response - I happened to stumble upon your posting just NOW!)

Manyh years ago there was a Bar/Restaurant on South Main Street in Wilmington, California (South of Los Angeles) called: Joe Keawe's Hale Hawaiian. Unfortunately I never visited the place. After finding this web-site and listening to some of his songs, I wish I had dropped in back in 1960 to hear this remarkable voice. I always thought he was related to Auntie Genoa Keawe, but now, after reading the background bio/history, I see that he was not. But isn't it unusual that two voices with the same last name KEAWE are noted for their interpretation of Authentic Hawaiian Falsetto Singing!! Hawaii and Hawaiians must be so very proud of these individuals. Was it Mark Twain that said there are only two kinds of people in the world: Hawaiians and those that wish they were Hawaiians.

Hi Joe (3rd),
My mom, Elaine "Lil" Rogan Tinsley, is related to Joe Sr. and danced hula at the bar back in the late 1950s.
I ran across an old amateur recording of Joe Sr. and brother David singing there back in the 1950s, harmonizing on the old songs and joking around. I wished I'd seen him perform live.
I would love to hear more about him, his career, his life and the bar, which was only a few miles from where I grew up in Torrance.
Mahalo!

I knew Joe Keawe, I called him daddy. He had a relationship with my mother Shirley from the time I was 6 months old, until he died in February of 1992, (26 years). I loved him like a father...he was the only father I knew! Even though the moments I spent with him were very limited, I still loved them and think about them all the time! I feel that he loved 2 woman for 26 years of his life. He was married two times, his first marriage produced 3 daughter's. Aunty Sweetheart, Aunty Maile, (my Godmother, who has passed) and Aunty Kaui. His first wife past away and he re-married Doris and had 2 son's Joseph and Robbie-(who has passed). He was an amazing singer and I have wonderful memories of him singing at different events. He gave me away at my wedding in 1984 and he also sang at my reception. My 2 oldest son's called him Grandpa and I was pregnant with my 3rd son when he passed away, I named my new son Joseph! His bar is located on Avalon Blvd. in Wilmington, California. I
haven't been in there since he passed, but I still remember it well. Joe was also a Longshoreman, Local 13. After reading the above messages, I thought about not writing this, but I owe it to my mother who lived 26 years of her life loving a man that could not be 100% her's!! I know a lot more about Joe Keawe. Please feel free to email me!

Aloha, My Name is Kenneth Keawe son of the late John Kalainia Laioha Keawe Sr., son of the late John Keawe and Hattie Kia. Not sure if this is the same John Keawe related to the Keawemauhili's. From what I was told as I recall, that our last name was also separated along the way, but it was Keawekane. My fathers' only living sister, who is now 86 years old, Helen (Keawekane) Kapoi resides here in Nanakuli, O'ahu. She was born the same year as my father, 1918, April, my dad was born on September 3rd. She kept the Keawekane, but my father kept only Keawe. We presume they both had the same father, John Keawe, but different mothers. Reason for being born the same year, different months. It would be nice to know if I have relatives, the Keawemauhili's or Keawekane's out there and if I do, you can email me. In the old hawaiian days a lot was said but not much spoken as time passed. I would like to keep in touch if you email me. Hope to hear from anyone soon. Mahalo for
sharing your mana'o.

I'm reading all of these messages about Joe Keawe with chicken skin & tears in my eyes. "Our story" began in the 1960's in California when our closest friends introduced my Mom & Dad (Ed & Alice) to the 'Ku' Ohana from Nanakuli. Since I was only about 6 or 7 yrs old I don't know all the details but I do remember all the luau's when Jacob, Toya & all the kids would come visit all of us in Long Beach. My Dad & our friends J.R. and Frank learned to play the ukelele and were introduced to Joe and his bar in Torrence by the Nanakuli ohana. I remember going their as a small kid, listened to Uncle Joe sing, everyone dance hula and eventually all us kids would fall asleep under the bar stools. Good, clean fun! REALLY! Sunny Kapuwai was related to the Ku's and was an amazing entertainer who went wherever "the party" was...and I'm sure, sang with Uncle Joe. This began my love affair with Hawai'i and her people, and now in my 50's I've lived in Hawai'i since high school. I am f
orever grateful to the Ku's and Uncle Joe for all the awesome memories...Thanks for letting me share!
Please email if you know these folks...or would like to talk story.

Many thanks for the wonderful family anecdotes about Joe. It really makes his music even more special to me knowing there is such a great community supporting him. I've been enjoying some of his work with the Harmony Hawaiians from the CD of Hapa-Haole Hawaiian Hula Classics. I love the mood he and his band created. Would anybody know who Joe's guitar player was and where I might find a collection of all of Joe's work? I only have Hawaiian Hula Eyes, My Little Grass Shack, Sophisticated Hula and Sweet Leilani which are all great tunes. Randy

Do you have the Joe Keawe solo CD?
http://www.mele.com/v3/info/612.htm
It's a CD re-release of his album, "Hawaii's Falsetto Returns".

In addition to his inclusion on the "Hapa-Haole Hawaiian Hula Classic", you can hear him on these CDs:

Hawaiian Lu`au Party

Hula Hawaiian Style

Lovely Hula Hands

Mele Hula Hawaiian Style

And if you like the old vinyls, you'll want to be searching for "Hawai`i Dances Just For You" which has Joe and many others on it.

Joe Keawe's rich, honeyed falsetto captured my attention and heart when I was a little girl living in Honolulu in the mid-50's. I never saw him perform but collected several of his 49th State recordings. He took Lena Machado's "Ho'onanea" and "Kauoha Mai" to another level. Let's all hope that Michael Chord puts those 2 songs on a future release of digitally-remastered 49th State recordings!! The postings here have given me much-desired information on this treasure of Hawaiian music, and I will look forward to making a pilgrimage to his bar in S. Calif. Ata Damasco's falsetto style is the closest I've ever found to Joe's.

Wow I acutally found my grandmas brother in-laws family members. Well my grandma would always lecture about the old days in Hawaii. Lets see if i can recall them...

Hattie Kanani Kia had 2 husbands. First husband was to Joe Keawes father which i dont recall the name. Which they had a child Joe Keawe. Thats all I know about that first marriage. After Joe Keawe Sr. past away she had her second marriage with my great grandfather with the last name Chun from South Korea. They grew up in Kona, HI where they had Hattie Kanani Chun, David Chun. They had more siblings but i cant recall their names. I remember my grandma telling me Joe Keawe and my uncle David Chun would sing together falseto. For Christmas she gave me a CD of uncle Joes CD and she use to tell me how his voice was so beautiful. I wish I could've known him. I just thought I'd let you know a little more about the family.

Aloha Janice,
Uncle David Chung died in August of 2005. Here's a link to his obituary:

I've seen his name written as Chun and Chung, not sure why. Most of his friends called him "Inyoung". I never met Uncle Joe or David, but I have heard informal recordings of the two singing together and it was very beautiful.

Aloha:

Born Josiah L. Keawemauhili in Holualoa, Hawaii on September 10, 1918, Joe Keawe would make a lasting contribution to Hawaiian falsetto singing before he would pass on in San Pedro, California at the age of 73 on February 6, 1992. Soon after his arrival from Kona, Joe Keawemauhili shortened his name to “Joe Keawe” and became another protégé of John Kameaaloha Almeida, performing on Almeida’s “Playground Quarter Hour” series on KGU radio. Keawe’s association with Almeida in the 1940’s resulted in many recordings on the new “49th State Records” label. Joe was recorded in 49th State’s very 1st recording session, and his version of “Pua Lilia” was the 7th release of the fledgling label. Joe Keawe’s falsetto ranges from a booming, full-bodied masculine cut and thrust to a rich clarity, both soft and sweet.

David Kawika Kaho’onei was born November 10, 1918 in Waimea, Kauai. He passed away in Santa Ana, California in 1973. David was another of the many young musicians who played on John Kameaaloha Almeida’s radio programs. David sang and played the guitar, steel guitar, and bass. He also spent countless hours performing at the “Kalakaua Jam Sessions” at King and Beretania Streets, or the “Charlie’s Taxi Stand Jam Sessions” downtown. He also performed at the “Sierra Café” in Kaimuki, “Kilohana Gardens”, “The Bottle Club”, and many others. In 1957, David Kaho’onei settled his family in Santa Ana, California, and continued to perform Hawaiian music on the mainland. Originally known as “Wai Hu’ihu’i O Ke Aniani”, the song “Wai O Ke Aniani”, or “Crystal Water” describes the beautiful scent of pikake flowers in the mist of a fine rain at Kahalu’u, Oahu. David Kaho'onei and Joe Keawe’s Harmony Hawaiians arranged a version on the “49th State” label.

Both "Pua Lilia" and "Wai Hu'ihu'i O Ke Aniani" are on the "Legends of Hawaiian Falsetto" CD, available at www.territorialairwaves.com.

Joe Keawe left Hawaii in the 1940"s. He came to California and married a second wife. Together, they raised two sons.
Joe Keawe brought to California all his talents. He opened a restaurant in Wilmington California and performed there nearly every night employing many a Hawaiian musician and restaurant staff. Additionally he maintained his longshoreman status and reported to work every am 4:00 to be exact. A very strong man who held the heart of his wife Doris and her undying support.
The Polynesian Society of California elected Joe Keawe as President in the late 60's and he remained president for over twenty years (not exact account but close).
Joe Keawe spent most of his waking moments servicing the public, rescuing his friends, yet, never above and beyond his fellow Hawaiians.

I was a friend of the Keawe family that lived in San Pedro. Robbie Keawe was my schoolmate and in 1975 when I graduated I lost touch. Robbie and I wrote for a few years when I moved to Florida and when I came back to San Pedro from Florida for a visit I had called Doris Keawe and found out that Robbie had passed away. It was a shocker for me since I called the bar in Wilmington and Doris thought it was some kind of a joke that I was asking for Robbie. Since that time I put up a memorial for Robbie on FindAGrave.com but I don't know where he was buried. If anyone knows anything about where Robbie is buried I would appreciate. So far I have his Mom and Dad there too with a memorial for them. Hope to hear from someone. I'm little Joe remembers me.

I knew Joe and Doris when I was a child living in Lomita, California . . . they were neighbors, sort of, in walking distance, and I was much charmed by their collie Prince. The connection was complicated; my mother had worked for the ILWU in San Francisco and Honolulu, met Joe and Doris through a mutual friend. If Doris is still alive, she may remember me and is likely to remember my mother, Pauline.

Greetings and aloha to their descendants . . . .
