I'm searching for the big hawaiian singer who died 1 or 2 years ago, he was black and very very fat, he's style is just "voice+guitar" and one of the last song he played is a cover from a very famous piece (I don't remember the name of that song but it's on every radio station)... he is fantastic, whats he's name????
Mahalo,
Alex.

That was my pal -- the late, great Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo`ole:

The song you've been hearing is Israel's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", paired as a medley with "What A Wonderful World". The song is included on his newest album, also:

Iz grew up three door down from Mr. Danny Couch in Nanakuli, the leeward side of Oahu. Iz's song Beyond the Rainbow is also featured in the movie MEET JOE BLACK.

I too discovered the wonderful Israel to late. However, it was not just my love of his song "Over the Rainbow" that made me buy his album. Actually what forced the purchase was my (then 6 month old)son. He wouldn't go to sleep to anything but this song. Then my mother brought back "Alone in IZ World" from her trip to Hawaii. I am pleased to say he now sleeps to Ahi Wela, as well. Iz was a genius of music. I know what I like when I hear it, but what speaks even louder than what I like is what my child loves. He loves Iz. Iz will be missed.

For those interested in IZ as well as several artists who are no longer with us; Loyal, Mackey Feary, Gabby, Arthur Lyman.
Danny Couch composed a song called "When Hawaiian's Fall" which is featured on his Award Winning CD "Something to Remember" I have a page dedicated to this song and the artists at

I welcome you to check it out. Danny performed it at the '03 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards... not a dry eye in the house!

I just saw the movie "50 First Dates. IZ' song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was used in the ending, and I admit I got teary-eyed. It's such a beautiful song. I just want to download that one song. I don't want an entire album. I've had trouble finding it online. If anyone has it, can you please send a link to my email?

Thanks from San Francisco.

January 25, 2006 Ted's Acapella group "Somewhere over the Rainbow" From TV show Scrubs Season 5 Episode 7 - My Way Home
I immediately recognized the song as Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's medley of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What A Wonderful World"
"Somewhere Over The Rainbow" has become the ukulele anthem of this generation. This version originates with the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Bradda Iz), now used in the TV Show Scrubs and lately in a Rice Krispy's commercial.
Iz's Music Lives On: Could you tell me what the song is in the Rice Krispies commercial that they've been playing lately? Pour milk into a bowl of cereal and watch you hear a distinctive snap, crackle and pop. But it's the music in the background that grabs the viewer's attention in this television commercial for Rice Krispies, a familiar and somewhat haunting tune that's turned out to have worldwide appeal.
"It misses your ears and goes directly to your heart”. said Jon de Mello, head of Mountain Apple records.
Kellogg's is the latest company to make Isreal Kamakawiwaole's rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" part of an ad campaign. It's now the soundtrack for dozens of commercials "Fiat, Rice Krispies, Kellogg's corn flakes, Hallmark," de Mello said when asked to name a few. Over the years, the song's been part of the soundtrack to dozens of films and TV shows. Producers bought the very same song for "Finding Forrester," "Made," "The Big Bounce," and "50 First Dates," for episodes of "ER," "Providence," "Charmed," and "Party of Five." It aired in an eToys ad during the Super Bowl, and then commercials throughout Japan, Europe, Australia, New Zealand. Although most listeners couldn't remember the name of the artist, it didn't matter. "It was just one of Isreal's favorites and he loved to play it, real simply and sing it and hum it and stum it."In 2002, fans of ER heard Kamakawiwaole's voice as they said goodbye to one of the show's most beloved characters. Over the years, the s
ong's been part of the soundtrack to dozens of films and TV shows. "The neat part of the licensing was it did start to take off before Israel died," de Mello said. "So he did feel a lot of it." The song was a personal favorite of Kamakawiwaole, but not one he often shared with his fans."The irony is real he never did Somewhere Over The Rainbow live," "It was not in his stage repertoire." "It is a legacy, it is growing and it's getting stronger," de Mello said. "It's not showing signs of slowing down or stopping at all."
The Rice Krispies commercial says childhood is calling, perhaps a fitting tribute to a man whose music lives on.

Does anyone know who preforms a cover of Iz's version of Somewhere over the Rainbow? It sounds like a young kid. I found it online but can't find any name attached to it.
Thanks!

That's Aselin Debison singing it. You'd like her stuff probably. The version of Rainbow is on an album called Sweet is the Melody, which is filled with Celtic music. Her second album, Bigger than Me, is more pop sounding. Both are great!

I went to Hawaii with my sister Josie Perez in Sept.this year, and it was the first time I had ever heard his music, I must say that it also touch my heart to hear such a beautiful voice. This evening I was watching a movie called "Tempted" and they played his song "Over the Rainbow" I must say, it was extremely pleasant to hear his voice. Tomorrow, I will make it a point to look for his CD and buy it. Buy the way, I had a great time with my sister.
