| Aloha! I am trying to find out some biographical information about Palani Kahala for an assignment I was given at my halau. The information on the internet is contained to a mention here and there - could anyone point me in the right direction? I've tried various online archives from U of H, Newspapers, etc. to no avail. Aloha Laua`e, I run a halau here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Halau Hula `O Walea), and I wanted to choreograph a hula kahiko to Kumu Palani's KE AHI A KA HAU (THE FIRE AND THE SNOW). He did it one year at Merrie Monarch, and the mele was outstanding! I've been looking online to see if I could dig up the lyrics, but have had absolutely no luck. I'm hoping you can help me? If I could be given the opportunity to do this mele justice, I would be most ha`a and ha`aheo. Mahalo nui for your consideration, Joy Walea Corpuz |

Aloha mai kaua, I just ran into this site and found out your interest in learning a specific dance composed and choreographed by Award-winning Kumu Hula, Palani Kahala. First of all, he was a close and personal friend whom I truly miss. Second, if you wish to know or learn any of the "mele hula", Kahiko or Auana, the person to contact is Wailani Robins, who is the Director for the Kahala Foundation an organization that cares for the valuable works of Frank "Palani" Kahala. There are also many of his hula students who all are now Kumu Hula in their rights. Palani Agosto, Pomai Gau'i, Leimomi Cruz, Kekaimoku Yoshikawa and Ka'ilipunohu Canopin, just to name a few. If its hula words and motions that you need, then these are the source to look too!!! "Nana i ke kumu". But if its personal information that you seek then, his family still live out in Kahana Valley. I believe that to perpetuate and continue the hula legacy and lineage of our hula, especially hula that belongs to certain Kumu Hula, their familly one must be very careful and respectful to the valuable works that are left for us to have and enjoy. Please feel free to contact me at my e-mail, I will locate some of the names I have mentioned above and wil state your request. Until then, a hui hou, Harmony T.K. Brighter |

Aloha Joy, As Harmony pointed out, the Kahala Foundation is still around. Wailani is still the President...(my mom is also on the board.) but they are not too active at the moment. They're going through some changes, hoping to make Palani's work accessible. I hope Harmony was able to point you in the right direction. =) She's a wonderful kumu hula, with a lot of contacts. Good luck! Let me know if I can do anything else to help. |

Wow, found a site about Oso, Frank, Palani. I think of you often I was married to Oso's cousin. First time I met Oso he was stationed in germany with my husband and I and Walt said try look him up so I did. Then Walt said try call him so I did. Well fell in love with him from there. Gotta love all the Kahala's special family. Oso he was awsome, he could lite us all up in a second, allways teaching us something. I see your face right now as I am typing this Huge smile. Love you Oso. To all who read keep your Hawaiianess alive! Everyday! Aloha Marcy |

Aloha Joy, If you are still looking for more information on my uncle, you can surely come to Kahana Valley. My Papa and Aunties are still around here to talk to. Well as you know his spirit still lies within us, especially since his ashes were spread here in Kahana. If you have any more questions you could message me and I'll get back at you soon.
